At the 12th edition of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul on Monday, Assam boxer and Tokyo Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain defeated previous world champion Chen Nien-Chin.
Lovlina (70kg) won a 3-2 split decision against the Chinese Taipei boxer, who had defeated her in the 2018 edition’s semifinals.
Lovlina Borgohain had previously defeated Chen in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics quarterfinals on her way to a bronze medal.
The 24-year-old Assam boxer, who has two bronze medals from the tournaments in 2018 and 2019, will now face Cindy Ngamba, a three-time national champion from England, in the round of 16 on Friday.
