Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has requested that other state chief ministers include a chapter about the general of the Ahom kingdom in Assam, Lachit Borphukan, in their respective states’ school textbooks.

The chief minister has written to all Chief Ministers in this respect so that the younger generation can learn how a 17th century Assam warrior fought from the front in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671 to prevent the Mughals from invading the region.

The Times Of India quoted CM Sarma as saying, “Commemorating Bir Lachit Borphukan’s 400th birth anniversary year, I have written to all the chief ministers and very soon I will be speaking with them personally in this regard. A student from Gujarat or Rajasthan or for that matter any other state will know who Lachit Borphukan is.”

Moreover, during President Ram Nath Kovind’s visit to Assam on February 25 to lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of the legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan’s memorial to commemorate his 400th birth anniversary, President Ram Nath Kovind praised him as “one of India’s greatest army generals.”
