In order to improve administrative efficiency, the Assam Government designated Tamulpur as the state’s new district.

The governor is pleased to authorise the formation of a new administrative district named as ‘Tamulpur,’ according to a notification issued by the governor.

The new district, according to the notification, will encompass the entire area of the existing Tamulpur Civil Sub-Division of the Baksa district, with its headquarters at Tamulpur.

Tamulpur will be the fifth district of BTR (Bodoland Territorial Region) and Assam’s 35th. Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, and Baksa are the BTR’s current four districts.

Darangajuli, Goibari, Nagrijuli, and Suklai Serfang constituencies of the BTC would be part of the newly formed district.

In 2020, when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was speaking at an election rally in Ghagrachak, Goibari, the decision to make Tamulpur a district was proposed. A medical college will be built at Tamulpur, according to CM Sarma, and a new bridge will be built over the Pagladia. A government college with Science, Arts, and Commerce courses will be established at Tamulpur. A stadium was also on his list of ideas.

Pramod Boro, CEM of BTR, announcing the news tweeted, “Extremely glad to share that Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri @jagdishmukhi ji has sanctioned the formation of new Administrative district ‘Tamulpur’. This will be the 5th district of BTR.”
