Mayor of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mrigen Sarania declared on Wednesday, that eviction drives will be conducted in several Guwahati footpaths, and all vendors are asked not to use the footpaths for commerce.

Vendors operating various small businesses will soon be removed from Guwahati’s footpaths.

“I request each vendor who has come from outside for trade to sell their goods by ferrying it to customers’ homes and leave the footpaths free for the residents of Guwahati to use. The residents use the footpaths to go to the markets. Students use the footpaths to walk to schools and colleges. Further, old people need footpaths to walk along,” said GMC Mayor Sarania.

Sarania further stated that the GMC is prepared to kindly ask that all street vendors remove their businesses from the footpaths. If the vendors do not comply with the order, he claims, the GMC will be compelled to take drastic measures.

Most of Guwahati’s footpaths have been filled by street vendors who have set up shop there almost permanently. People had difficulty walking freely on the footpaths, and the administration has done little nothing to address the issue until now.
