Those who never had the opportunity to witness Assam’s state bird, the White-Winged Wood Duck, in the wild can now do so at the Assam State Zoo.

The Czech Republic provided Assam with its state bird. The birds arrived on Sunday after flying from Prague on Qatar Airways.

The Zoo has received two captive-bred pairs. The birds have been quarantined for 45 days and it will take some time before the public is permitted to see them.

The procedure of obtaining the bird began in 2019, from the other side of the world.

Assam State Zoo’s divisional forest officer, Ashwini Kumar, claims that this is the country’s only zoo with white-winged wood ducks. It’s known as “Deo Hanh” (Divine Duck) in the area because of its haunting night calls.
