Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) has been implemented in parts of Guwahati by the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, with effect from May 1.

As a result, a gathering of more than 5 people, agitation, demonstrations, procession, and raising of slogans throughout the entire East Police District of Guwahati, including Dispur, Bhangagarh, Basistha, Hatigaon, Sonapur, and Khetri Police Station area, are outlawed.

The order was issued in response to reports of unspecified individuals or groups disrupting routine office operations, public movement, and traffic flow in parts of Guwahati’s East Police District, thus disrupting peace and public order.

The official order stated, “…in exercise of powers conferred upon me under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 read with Govt. of Assam Notification No. HMA. 7352008/Pt.-1/243. dated, 24.12.2014, 1, Shri Sudhalcar Singh, APS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cot Polio District, Guwahati do hereby prohibit assembly of more than 5 (five) persons, agitation. demonstration, procession and shouting slogans in the entire East Police District, Guwahati covering Dispur, Bhangagarh, Basistha, Hatigaon, Sonapur and Khetri Police Station area under it without prior permission from competent authority. The order shall remain in force from 1st May, 2022. Any person aggrieved by this order is, however, at liberty to appear before me for filing written objection, if any, for cancellation/modification of the order.
