Poachers slaughtered a full-grown rhinoceros and chopped off its horn before fleeing the Kaziranga National Park on Wednesday night, putting an end to a pause in rhino poaching inside the park.

This is the first case of rhino poaching at the world-renowned wildlife sanctuary this year; the previous time poachers murdered a rhinoceros at Kaziranga was in April of last year, exactly nine months ago.

P Sivakumar, Kaziranga National Park Field Director, told News Live that the incident occurred on Wednesday night in the national park’s Kohra area. He said, “We got the information today morning and an investigation is currently being carried out. The rhino was killed and its horn was taken away by poachers.”

Meanwhile, park officials have begun a huge operation to trace down and apprehend the poachers.
