In celebration of the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,” the Government of India put “O Mur Apunar Desh,” the state anthem of Assam, to the Melodies of Freedom.
Melodies of Freedom, one of the initiatives under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, is a section where the state songs are represented to celebrate our rich and diverse nation. It aims to emphasise the distinctive identity of each State through melody. Each song casts a focus on the many shades the country stands for, from its rich heritage to the brilliant minds that were raised there to its tangible and intangible culture.
Lakshminath Bezbarua wrote the state song of Assam, “O Mur Apunar Desh,” while Kamala Prasad Agarwala composed the tune. It was first published in 1909 in the Assamese magazine “Bahi,” and was formally adopted as Assam’s State anthem in 1927 during the Assam Student Conference held in Tezpur.
