Forest officials apprehended a man from Guwahati’s Matgharia area on Wednesday, for reportedly hunting and killing a protected Barking Deer for consumption.

The man, identified as Shyam Chandra Ray was detained from the Highland Enclave near Carbon Gate in Matgharia by officials from the Narengi Beat Office of the Guwahati Range.

According to an official release, a deer carcass with a shattered neck and damaged right limb was discovered wrapped in a cement bag in his possession.

On basis of specific information and eyewitness testimony, a raid on the accused’s residence was carried out.

Two people have been booked under various sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the second of whom has not been named.
