Majuli, famed for its mask-making and manuscript painting, has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Indian Government.

The traditional craft of Mask-making, or Mukha Shilpa, deeply rooted in Majuli’s culture, traces its origins to the medieval ages when Saint Sankardeva utilized it as part of spreading Neo-Vaisnavism.

These masks, representing diverse images and emotions, capture the essence of the region’s unique socio-religious culture. Manuscript paintings, another revered art form in Majuli, portray tales from Hindu epics, with a focus on Lord Krishna, using three popular writing styles – Gargayan script, Kaithall, and Bamunia.
