Mahesh Deori, who is known for the iconic “Haga Lagise Niki Oi” scene in the cult classic Assamese comedy movie, “Local Kung Fu,” passed away.

Mahesh Deori was suffering from Lungs Cancer.

Kenny Basumatary, the director of Local Kung Fu, wrote a heartfelt note for Deori. He wrote, “Haga lagise neki oi! This line from Local Kung Fu propelled Uncle Mahesh to cult status in Assam. But even before that, he was the gold standard father, husband, brother, uncle etc in our family.”

“Born in 1961, he did his schooling in Shillong and was the first of five siblings to get a job. He was also the first to own a car – an ambassador numbered BHA 222, from his days in Mughalsarai. Momai Motte (as my brother and I addressed him) had exquisitely beautiful handwriting. In the days of handwritten letters, he wrote down the lyrics to three Johnny Lee country songs and posted them to us, and those pages remained an invaluable treasure for a long time,” wrote Kenny Basumatary.

“He was diagnosed with lung cancer a few years ago. He kept his chin up right till the end. Despite being highly frail this last Christmas party, he still left his bed and danced a couple of steps with us,” he added.

“Momai would definitely have been in Local Kung Fu 3. But wherever he is now, he must be uplifting the place with his cheerfulness and his music. His guitar was buried along with him,” he concluded.

The heartfelt note of Kenny Deori Basumatary can be read on the official Facebook page of Local Kung Fu.
