At least 20 commandos were deployed as part of an anti-poaching unit in the world-famous Kaziranga National Park on Wednesday, January 26.

The deployment started after the first rhino poaching incident of the year was reported in the state last week.

Assam Police Special Director General, GP Singh ordered the deployment of commandos in the park to boost anti-poaching operations earlier this week while inspecting the crime location in the park.

Ten commandoes were reportedly deployed in the park’s Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, while ten more were deployed in the Biswanath Wildlife Divisions.

On January 20, the state reported the first rhino poaching of the year. The rhino’s carcass was found in a deteriorated state, with its horn missing.

Last year, only one poaching incident was reported, the lowest in the prior two decades.
