The Kamakhya Temple in Assam is not being adequately maintained, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday, adding that there cannot be any compromise on hygiene.

A case involving the maintenance of the temple was being heard by a panel of Justices Ajay Rastogi and C T Ravikumar.

Asserting that the temple is not being adequately maintained, Justice Rastogi noted that he was there over the holidays.

In his argument on behalf of the temple, senior attorney Rajeev Dhavan said that in this case, some individuals wrote letters alleging that hygiene was not being maintained. He claimed that the temple has been taken care of by enlisting professional organisations like the Indian Institute of Technology.

In order to give the parties a chance to reach a mutually agreeable resolution, the supreme court postponed the case’s hearing until January 2023.
