Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered the renaming of the Kalapahar area in Guwahati on Monday.

This has been informed by West Guwahati MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita.

MLA Kalita said, “The name will be changed based on the advice of the people. We will soon discuss the matter with the public and the name will be changed as per the suggestion of the public.”

The government of Assam plans to modify the names of places and villages that do not reflect the state’s culture and tradition. The state government is planning to develop a web portal where citizens can request for a name change for their area.

Chief Minister Sarma said during a bhumi pujan ceremony for Guwahati’s second medical college, “there are some places which people of the locality do not wish to take the name. There are places which are named out of malice in some communities. This has to change.”

Guwahati’s Kalaphar was named after Kalapahad who was Muslim General of Bengal Sultanate and attacked the Kamakhya temple, he said. “So definitely this name has to be removed, I have urged the local MLA to consult with the people and suggest a suitable name.”

He added, “The government will soon open a web portal where people can apply for change of the name of places. Those places which are not in consonance with our culture and tradition have to be changed.”
