As floods and landslides continue to wreak havoc in Assam following a week of nonstop rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for Assam and Meghalaya, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rain over the next four days.

The IMD has forecast widespread heavy to extremely heavy rains, along with thunder and lightning, across the Northeast until May 21. Thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy to very heavy rainfall are also probable over Meghalaya at this time, with exceptionally high rainfall in isolated areas.

Meanwhile, Assam’s floods continued to cause havoc, affecting nearly 4 lakh people across 26 districts. In the state, the death toll from floods and landslides has risen to 8.

Since Monday, eleven embankments have been breached, with another six being impacted, in addition to the damage to houses, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure.
