Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the state government and Spices Board would build a quality evaluation laboratory and training centre for spices in Guwahati to help promote the region’s spice sector.

Inaugurating the International Buyer Seller Meet and Spices Conclave (IBSM) organised by Spices Board at Guwahati, the chief minister stated that Assam can leverage its potential for becoming a major hub for post-harvest processing and value addition of spices from the region, as well as one of the major exporting hubs, because it is the gateway to northeast India, with better connectivity and rapidly developing infrastructure.

“International buyer seller meet and spices conclave’ is envisaged to promote the indigenous spices of the eight northeastern states, especially the GI tagged varieties like Sikkim’s large aardamom, Assam’s Karbi Anglong ginger, Naga chilly, Bird’s Eye Chilli (Mizo Chilli), Hathei Chilly and Dalle Khursani,” said D. Sathiyan IFS, Secretary of the Spices Board.

Over 50 prospective customers from Europe, Africa, Australia, and Asia visited the IBSM’s inaugural event. The IBSM and spices conclave was attended by spice vendors from Assam and the other seven northeastern states.
