For the first time, a record number of 30 women were elected to the 60-member Guwahati Municipal Corporation executive body, with 50% reservation for women.
The BJP has the most female members, with 26. Two of the candidates, both women, were elected without opposition.
Three women are among the six winners for the BJP’s ally AGP, while AAP’s lone winner in its first triumph is also a woman.
While there will be an equal number of men and women councillors in the new corporation, women voters in the GMC outweigh their male counterparts by nearly 3000 in the current voter list.
