Guwahati city has lost around 300 trees in the last two years for the construction of flyovers and roadways within the capital metropolis, most of which are estimated to be around 70 to 80 years old.
According to reports, 254 trees were felled in Palashbari under Kamrup East forest division for road development under the Asom Mala scheme, a programme for state highways and main district roads inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2021.
According to Rohini Saikia, the Kamrup east divisional forest officer, 12 trees, including some of the oldest, were felled for the construction of the Zoo Road Tiniali flyover.
