As Guwahatians get ready to ring in the New Year, the Guwahati Police and District Transport Office have announced that there will be rigorous checking throughout the city.

District Transport Officer for Kamrup Metro, Rafikul Islam, warned in a statement to ‘G Plus’ that anyone caught driving while intoxicated will face a fine of 10,000 (Rupees ten thousand) rupees.

“Guwahati Traffic Police and Transport officials are conducting strict checking across key locations in the city. Furthermore, in case of drunk-driving, along with the penalty, their driving licence may also be also be suspended,” added Islam.

Residents have been cautioned not to engage in such activities by the District Transport Office, which also made known that the Assam Government has decided to take severe action against violations.
