Eight streets in Guwahati are proposed to have new names. The government had previously suggested renaming Guwahati’s Kalapahar area.

Kalapahar and Sarab Bhatti were recommended to be renamed as Nilachal Nagar and Aryanagar, respectively, by Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania on Wednesday.

The names of the remaining six areas will likewise change soon.

The GMC’s decision to rename the areas is likely to be made with public approval.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the name of the Kalapahar area in Guwahati must be changed, urging the local MLA to consult with the community and make recommendations for a more appropriate name.

The Chief Minister stated that the name “Kalapahar” should be renamed because it was originally given to honour the tyrannical Muslim General of the Bengal Sultanate, Kalapahar.
