Four people have been arrested so far in Assam’s Cachar district for reportedly damaging the embankment of the Barak river, which resulted in a disastrous flood situation in Silchar.

According to the police inquiry, the floods were provoked by man-made activity. Major damage to the embankment in Bethukandi in the Barak valley caused the floods in Cachar. Following the enormous floods that devastated several valley districts, questions were raised about the unexpected breach, and an investigation was launched. It was discovered that the floods were not generated by natural causes, but rather by the actions of some people.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a probe and directed police to apprehend the perpetrators. The police also obtained a video of the breach, which was viewed by the CM. While touring the Barak valley last week, CM Sarma also revealed that six persons were involved in the incident.

The Cachar police detained the four offenders, identified as Kabul Khan, Mitu Hussain Laskar, Nazir Hussain Laskar, and Ripon Khan, from various locations based on the video and extensive investigation. The search for the others who may be involved is still ongoing.
