Owing to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election, the Government of Assam has declared ‘dry days’ in the Guwahati Metropolitan area.

From 4.30 p.m. on April 20 to 4.30 p.m. on April 22, there will be dry days, according to GMC’s order. Furthermore, on the day of counting, April 24, there will be a dry day until the counting process is completed, including any re-polls within a polling area.

The order stated, “The Governor of Assam is pleased to declare ‘DRY DAYS’ from 4:30 P.M of 20/04/2022 to 4:30 P.M. of 22/04/2022 including the day of the counting of votes which is fixed on 24/04/2022 is also declared as DRY DAY till the process of Counting is over and including the day of Re-Poll if any within a polling area.”

The order added, “During the period, Governor of Assam is pleased to Prohibits the Possession of any intoxicants by any person or groups of persons, a total ban on the sale of liquor, giving or distribution of Spirituous, fermented or intoxicating liquors or other substances of alike nature at a hotel, eating house, tavern, Shop or other places – Public or Private. All Bonded (Wholesale) Warehouse, NFL Retail “OFF” & “ON” Shops including Club & Hotel ON and Country Spirits Shops will remain closed during the DRY DAY. During this period the Storage of Liquor by individuals shall be curtailed.”

The Excise law’s prohibitions on the storing of liquor in unlicensed premises will be strictly enforced throughout this period. All sixty wards of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation must take steps to prevent the selling of liquor in adjoining areas.

“Any violation of the order shall be dealt with under the relevant Provision of Assam Excise Act and Rules & under the provision of section 135 (C) of Election Rules to respective constituencies,” the order said.
