The Assam Kaziranga University

Assam celebrates a historic moment as Dr. Rupam Jyoti Sarmah becomes the first ever Assamese to be appointed as an advisor to the President of the United States. Dr. Sarmah has been selected as the White House Presidential Innovation Fellow (PIF), a prestigious group of senior advisors who have direct access to decision-making agency leaders. As the head of the agency for “Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health” (ARPA-H), Dr. Sarmah will be responsible for bringing his subject-matter expertise and institutional knowledge to the table.

On April 10th, Dr. Sarmah took the oath, and on April 14th, he will attend the “White House Welcome” event. He completed his graduation from Jorhat Engineering College in Assam and later migrated to the US, where he earned a Master’s in Computer Science, a Master’s in Management, and a Doctorate from George Washington University. His research primarily focused on Artificial Intelligence and Autism.

Prior to his appointment as PIF 2023, Dr. Sarmah served as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the State of California. He currently resides in Sacramento, California. Notably, Dr. Sarmah is one of nineteen PIF fellows selected from various fields, including technology, healthcare organizations, financial services, and more.

Dr. Sarmah’s appointment is a proud moment for Assam and a testament to the talent and capability of individuals from the region. His roots in Jorhat, Assam, are a source of inspiration for many young people in the state.
