Guwahati will soon be connected with eight South and Southeast Asian (SEA) cities, announced the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

According to reports, two more NE capitals that will be connected to SEA cities are Agartala and Imphal.

According to reports, the Centre has proposed that the regional air connectivity scheme, UDAN, begin operations to and from Agartala-Dhaka, Agartala-Chittagong, Guwahati-Bangkok, Guwahati-Kathmandu, Guwahati-Yangon, Guwahati-Hanoi, Imphal-Mandalay, Imphal-Bangkok, and Imphal-Kunming.

Under the UDAN scheme, the Ministry has also suggested connecting Bhubaneshwar with Singapore, Bangkok, and Abu Dhabi.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb expressed his appreciation for this initiative via Twitter. He tweeted, “Finally, MBB Airport in Agartala is now set to have international flight service with Dhaka and Chittagong. My heartfelt thanks to Modi ji and Scindia ji for this initiative to fulfill the dream of the people of Tripura.”

He added, “The proposed international flight service with Bangladesh will surely boost Tripura’s tourism and take the state to a new height in terms of air connectivity. It will also benefit the people of Bangladesh in various ways and strengthen the cordial relation between the two countries.”

The people of the northeastern states have long advocated for air connectivity with SEA cities in order to boost regional tourism and trade.
