The number of thefts, murders, and other crimes in Guwahati has increased dramatically over the last six years, according to data released by the Assam government during the ongoing Budget Session of the Assembly.

Between April 2016 and February 2022, the city reported 23,311 thefts, a significant rise above the 13,740 instances reported between 2011 and March 2016. On Monday, March 28, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma provided the data in response to a question from AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita.

Kidnappings, pickpocketings, murders, and loot all have increased significantly in Guwahati within the same time period.

Between 2016 and 2022, there were 3,648 cases of kidnapping in Guwahati, a significant rise over the 2,546 cases reported between 2011 and 2016. Similarly, the number of murders increased from 395 to 425 within the same time period.

Between April 2016 and February 2022, Guwahati registered 31,005 criminal cases, up from 18,666 cases between 2011 and March 2016.
