Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has pledged to introduce legislation aimed at protecting the Chutia community’s identity. This move follows discussions with Chutia community organizations addressing various concerns.

The Chutia community, primarily residing in Assam, has faced the misuse of their surname, “Chutia,” leading to derogatory connotations. Notably, the correct pronunciation is “Sutiya,” with historical and ethnic significance within Assam.

The name “Chutia” has a complex history, with multiple theories about its origin. One theory links it to the Assamese word “Chutiya,” meaning “a hill,” suggesting a possible origin in the hill regions of present-day Arunachal Pradesh. Another theory connects it to the Tai Ahom word “Chuti,” signifying “lord” or “ruler.” A third theory associates it with the Sanskrit word “Chhatriya,” implying a warrior caste.

This proposed legislation aims to protect the Chutia community’s identity, preserving their cultural heritage and ending surname misuse. It reflects the government’s commitment to honoring Assam’s diverse identities.
