Assam BJP legislator Rupjyoti Kurmi from Mariani sparked controversy on April 4 when he called for the demolition of two of India’s most iconic landmarks, the Taj Mahal and Qutub Minar.
Kurmi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to replace these Mughal-era monuments with the world’s most beautiful temple, asserting that it should be so unique in design that no other establishment can come close to its architecture.
Kurmi also pledged to donate his one-year salary towards the construction of the temple. The proposal comes at a time when the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has recently revised its textbooks and syllabus, resulting in the removal of chapters related to the Mughal empire from the 12th class History book. The changes will take effect in the current academic session of 2023-2024, affecting schools across India.
