Assam’s historic Rang Ghar monument in Sivasagar district is set to become an international tourist destination as the government announces plans to develop a 26-acre area surrounding the landmark.

The project will cost an estimated Rs 124-crore and will include an artisan village, guest house, tourist information centre, amphitheatre, boat house, and sound and light show.

The Rang Ghar, which is a two-storeyed building, was once a royal sports-pavilion where Ahom kings and nobles watched buffalo fights and other sports. Built with bamboo and wood during the reign of Swargadeo Rudra Singha, the amphitheatre was later reconstructed with brick by Swargadeo Pramatta Singha between 1744-1751 AD. Ranghar is considered to be one of the oldest surviving amphitheatres in Asia.
