Sahil Dey of Assam has earned his first Grandmaster norm at the Cattolica Chess Festival 2022, which took place in Cattolica Town, Italy, from the 4th to the 11th of June 2022.

Dey, who is 15 years old, has taken a huge stride toward becoming the first Grandmaster from the Northeast with this achievement.

He finished third with a creditable 6.5 points after nine rounds.

Grandmaster Sabino Brunello of Italy took top place with 7 points, followed by Grandmaster Levan Pantsulaia of Georgia with 6.5 points.

Sahil earned his first Grandmaster norms as a result of these results.

To become a grandmaster, he must now obtain two more grandmaster norms and raise his rating to 2500 points.

Dey is Northeast’s first and only International Master.

Dey has been congratulated by the All Assam Chess Association, Guwahati Chess Association, Guwahati Chess Academy, Sports & Youth Welfare, Assam, and Sports Authority of Assam, for his outstanding achievement.

The Sports Authority of Assam tweeted, “Sports & Youth Welfare, Assam and Sports Authority of Assam conveys heartiest congratulations to Shahil Dey for becoming Northeast and Assam’s first and latest International Master of India. May he bring more laurels for Assam.”
