Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the state will soon set up a semiconductor plant with an initial investment of Rs 40,000 crore. The plant is expected to boost the state’s power generation capabilities and reduce its dependence on other regions.

Speaking in the Assembly session, Sarma said that the state currently generates only 400 MWs of power at a cost of Rs 9, which is why the tariff in the domestic category is less compared to other states. He added that the consumption of power has come down drastically to 60 per cent in households where smart meters have been installed.

The semiconductor plant is expected to create thousands of jobs and attract investment from other industries. It is a major step in Assam’s efforts to become a hub for electronics manufacturing.
