Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that Assam will soon have an open-space zoo in Silchar to protect the state’s wildlife.

The chief minister made the announcement following a Cabinet meeting in Haflong, Dima Hasao district.

The open space zoo will allow the animals to interact with the zoo surroundings more like they would in the wild. They will not be trapped within the same four walls for the rest of their life.

The animals will be able to travel and visit other places, thanks to this novel concept. The zoo will cost Rs 214 crore to build.

Safari rides or other vehicles will be required for visitors to see the animals at the zoo. Hopefully, these improvements will result in zoos becoming more vibrant institutions rather than museums.

The projected zoo location will be roughly 200 hectares in size. The site will be built without harming the local vegetation.
