Assam government will soon introduce a law for domestic helpers hired to perform household duties, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday.

“A new law on domestic helpers will soon be introduced by the government,” said the chief minister. He further said, “It is also noticed by the government that many tribal children are hired to do household chores.”

He added that if employers engage children as domestic helpers, they must notify the police. He also explained that under the legislation, even if their parents permit them to work, the employers will be liable for paying for their education.

Notable, Assam Assembly’s autumn session began on Monday and will last through September 19. There will be 15 bills in the session, of which 11 are amendment bills, 2 are repeal bills, and 2 are new bills.
