Assam’s cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024, recognizing Manipuri as an associate official language in Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Hojai districts. The decision, aimed at preserving Manipuri cultural identity, involves amending the Assam Official Language Act, 1960, by inserting a new section.

Additionally, the cabinet announced the introduction of primary education in six tribal languages and received praise from Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. While Barak Valley organizations welcomed the move, some also called for recognition of Bengali as the state’s associate official language. Manipuri organizations in Barak Valley celebrated the decision, long-awaited since their initial demand in 1991.
