One person, identified as Kosheshwar Bora, died of Japanese encephalitis at Titabor in Assam’s Jorhat district. Japanese encephalitis is a viral brain ailment spread by mosquito bites.

Bora died on Friday morning, according to reports. He had been confined at Jorhat Mission Hospital for the previous few days.

Japanese encephalitis virus JEV is the most important cause of viral encephalitis in Asia. It is a mosquito-borne flavivirus, and belongs to the same genus as dengue, yellow fever, and West Nile viruses. The virus is found in pigs and birds and is transmitted to mosquitos when they bite infected animals.
