The Assam government has announced that March 31 will be observed as ‘Students’ Day’ to honor the birthday of Upendra Nath Brahma, a former president of the All Bodo Students’ Union. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma believes that this initiative will not only pay tribute to Brahma’s contributions but also inspire students to work for the betterment of their community. Brahma was born in Boragari village of Dotma, Kokrajhar district, Assam, in 1956, and grew up in poverty. Despite the odds, he excelled academically and went on to become a respected student leader.

As part of this initiative, the government will distribute 52,000 mobile tablets to schools and provide Rs. 1,450 each to 3.50 lakh students of the 2022-23 academic year for buying books. CM Sarma believes that this will enhance students’ learning experience and create a digital environment for them.

Brahma, who passed away in 1990 due to blood cancer, worked tirelessly for the education and wellbeing of the Bodo community. Under his leadership, the ABSU included political issues as part of its agenda to give political maturity to the students.

Brahma’s legacy continues to inspire and guide the community, and the bronze statue of Brahma in Kokrajhar serves as a reminder of his contribution to society. The title of Bodofa (Guardian of Bodos) was posthumously conferred upon him in recognition of his vision and leadership. His life is celebrated each year on the anniversary of his death, which is now called Bodofa Day. The Assam Government’s decision to observe Students’ Day on Brahma’s birthday is a fitting tribute to his contributions and an opportunity to inspire future generations.
