The Assam Cabinet on Tuesday approved the recognition of five Assamese Muslim sub-groups as “indigenous” Assamese Muslim communities: Goriyas, Moriyas, Julhas, Deshis, and Syeds.
“The move would ensure their development in health, cultural identity, education, financial inclusion, skill development, and women empowerment,” stated Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while speaking to the media.
It is a significant step toward ensuring the rights of indigenous communities and religious minorities in Assam.
