During the Assam Legislative Assembly budget session, Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya revealed the state collected a significant Rs. 3,816 crore in revenue from liquor sales in the 2023-24 financial year.

Responding to a query from MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Suklabaidya shared that Assam currently has 3,003 liquor shops, including 1,707 foreign liquor shops, 923 pubs, and 373 indigenous liquor shops.

Interestingly, the festive season fueled liquor sales, with Guwahati witnessing particularly high numbers. The city raked in a staggering Rs. 12.5 crore in liquor sales over two days during Magh Bihu, followed by Rs. 8.5 crore on New Year’s Eve, Rs. 6.8 crore during Diwali, and Rs. 22 crore over three days during Durga Puja. These figures highlight the significant contribution of festive periods to the state’s liquor revenue.
