Assam has achieved a significant milestone by entering the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest number of essays written on Lachit Borphukan, with over 42 lakh essays submitted. Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, was presented with the Certificate of Record by representatives of Guinness World Records Limited, UK, to acknowledge this achievement.

In November 2022, the Chief Minister had requested the people of Assam to light earthen lamps at home to celebrate the 400th birth anniversary of Bir Lachit Barphukan. Lachit Borphukan played a crucial role in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat on the Brahmaputra, which thwarted a long-term attempt by the Mughal forces, led by Raja Ramsingh-I, to recapture Assam.

The Assam government had launched a mobile app and web portal to commemorate the 400th birth anniversary of the great Ahom army general. The portal and mobile application have been designed to enable people across Assam, other parts of India, and foreign countries to express their appreciation for Lachit Barphukan in the form of write-ups and essays.
