After suspecting his partner of cheating on him, a sixth-semester student at Madhab Choudhury College in Barpeta committed suicide by plunging into a river.
The deceased, Himjyoti Das, was a resident of Patbausi village in Barpeta.
According to reports, residents near the banks of the Beki River in Jania discovered the deceased, who had been missing since Friday.
A suicide note from the deceased was recovered, in which he said, “I have committed a major mistake for which I had to choose this path today. I was a fake lover. I am ashamed of what I’ve done and it is embarrassing for me to be alive. My fault was that I used a fake phone number to disgrace someone. It’s better for me to die. No one should file a police case for my death as the crime I committed itself is odious.”
Meanwhile, a family member of the victim filed an FIR against Mrinmoy Pathak, a Bajali youth, alleging that the former took such drastic steps because of him.
Students at Madhab Choudhury College, on the other hand, have urged that the matter be investigated thoroughly.
