The Assam Cabinet approved the Vehicle Scrappage Policy of Assam, 2022 on Tuesday, July 5. This policy will significantly alter how cars and other vehicles are recycled.

For the state’s expanding recycling and scrap metal industries, this announcement will be a game-changer.

The decision is made during a cabinet meeting presided over by Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam.

The decision is made to enable the efficient application of the Registration & Functions of Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF), Policy to minimise vehicular pollution and phase out unfit & polluting vehicles, consequently promoting the environmentally friendly recycling of vehicle scrap.

This will free up space that is currently being occupied by such unneeded vehicles that are either being towed by their owners or are just being left because of incidental damages.

Older vehicles without fitness certificates, damaged vehicles, and vehicles owned by the government that are over 15 years old will all be scrapped.

People can also choose to voluntarily scrap their old vehicles, and the scrap facility centres will give certifications to guarantee that the owners receive discounts when purchasing new vehicles.
