The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) has decided to remove Bihu from the curriculum for classes 11 and 12.

Students who are currently studying Bihu as a subject at higher secondary school were taken aback by the council’s decision.

The announcement comes as a shocker from the side of the council which comes at a time when the Centre’s New Education Policy (NEP) prioritised cultural studies.

People have expressed their concerns about the subject’s removal from the curriculum.

It’s worth mentioning that, the AHSEC had introduced Bihu as an elective subject in the Higher Secondary course from the 2020-2021 academic session. Students who choose Bihu as their elective subject had to attempt the question paper of 100 marks, which comprised theory as well as practical segments.

According to a statement released by the AHSEC earlier, the addition of Bihu as a subject at the Higher Secondary level will benefit students who plan to study Performing Arts at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
