Assam government has decided to close 34 schools due to the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exam’s (taken in March this year) nil pass rate. Pegu stated in a media interview that educating students is a school’s main responsibility. It serves little purpose to maintain these schools in operation if they cannot guarantee that their students will pass the Class X exam.

Only 56.47% of students passed the HSLC this year, giving the state its worst overall performance. The COVID-19 pandemic interruption and the formula-based evaluation caused a substantial fall in the percentage, with only 40% of the candidates passing the final exam.

Five schools in Cachar and Jorhat were followed by seven schools from Karbi Anglong that had 0% pass rates. In the districts of Dhubri, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, and Nagaon, two schools would close; in Chirang, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, Hailakandi, and West Karbi Anglong, there will be one closure per district.

In a media statement, Mamata Hojai stated that a strategy had been created to combine all of the schools with a zero performance level with the closest schools by the start of current academic year.

According to her, the procedure to combine four of these schools has already begun, and students and teachers will soon be transferred to the secondary schools in the area.
