A 17-year-old boy was suspected to have drowned in the Brahmaputra river in an unfortunate occurrence at Guwahati’s Pandu area after he accidentally slipped into the river on Monday, 15th August.

Locals claim that the boy fell into the river while filming a video on his mobile phone.

The boy was identified as Bishal Ghosh, a local of Boripara in the Pandu area of the city.

Even though police arrived on the scene quickly and launched a rescue effort, the boy was yet to be rescued.

Teams from the state disaster reaction force (SDRF) have been activated in the interim to carry out a rescue operation.

Roopak Kumar Bora, the official in charge of the Jalukbari police station, said, “Our teams, including the river police and SDRF, have launched an extensive search and rescue operation to trace the youth. We will continue our operations till the youth is found.”

“Last year too, four youths were washed away after they fell into the river at the same place in a similar way. Later, three of the bodies were recovered but the fourth youth was never found,” he added.
