Assam’s Apurna Narzary led the Indian women’s football team to a decisive 7-0 victory over Singapore in Vietnam during the first round of the AFC Under-20 Asian Cup Qualifiers.

As captain, Narzary played a key role in the team’s impressive performance, scoring two goals herself.

Hailing from Assam’s Kokrajhar, Apurna Narzary became the first woman to claim the feat. She said, “For a few seconds, I could not believe my ears. It was a huge honour for me. I felt proud when Maymol madam told me about my appointment. At the same time, the first thing that came to my mind was that it was a big responsibility and we should make every effort to qualify for the next round.”

The win is an important step forward for women’s sports in India and comes ahead of International Women’s Day, providing renewed hope for greater equality in the field. Despite initial nerves, Narzary received support and motivation from her senior teammates and successfully led the team to victory.
