Guwahati is set to witness the construction of the Unity Mall (Ekta Mall), as announced by the Assam Government. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter on Monday (July 24) to share the exciting news about the upcoming project. In his tweet, he praised the relentless efforts of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji in fostering national integration, making special mention of the Unity Mall that is soon to become a reality in Assam.

The Chief Minister elaborated that the establishment of Unity Malls aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, wherein the Government of India has been encouraging States to set up such malls dedicated to the sale and promotion of One District One Product (ODOPs), handicrafts, GI products, as well as products from other states. Given its significance as the capital and the gateway to Southeast Asia, Guwahati has been chosen as the ideal location for Assam’s Unity Mall.

The proposed structure will comprise two levels of basement, a ground floor, and five storeys above, offering a plethora of amenities and facilities. Chief Minister Sarma highlighted some of the mall’s distinctive features, including 35 shops dedicated to each State and Union Territory, 35 shops for Assam’s districts, outlets for Indian commercial brands, a food court, yoga and meditation area, art gallery, and dormitories, among others.

One of the primary objectives of the Unity Mall is to support and empower local producers and artisans, fostering job opportunities and promoting the “Made in Assam” and “Made in India” products. This initiative aims to strengthen the regional economy and showcase the diversity of special products from different districts.

The news of Assam’s Unity Mall comes on the heels of the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement during the recent union budget. She had emphasized the Center’s intention to encourage state governments to establish Unity Malls in state capitals or major cities. This move further supports the ODOP initiative, which seeks to boost district-wise special products across the country.

As the construction of the Unity Mall commences, expectations run high for its potential to bolster economic growth, foster cultural exchange, and celebrate the diverse heritage of India’s various regions.
